Block Engineering Management Team
Daniel J. Cavicchio, Jr., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Dr. Cavicchio holds a B.S. Degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and a M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. He was an Engagement Manager at the consulting firm of McKinsey & Company and Director of Business Development at American Can Company. Dr. Cavicchio co-founded Greenwich Venture Partners, Inc., and subsequently acquired Commonwealth Sprague Capacitor, Inc., a power capacitor company, and Block Engineering. At Block he directs strategy, programs and customer interfaces.
Michael L. Bickford, Vice Chairman
Mr. Bickford holds a B.S. degree from Boston College, an MBA from the University of Bridgeport, and is a graduate of the Executive Program at the London Business School. Mr. Bickford served in the U.S. Army and the National Guard. He founded and led BIC Consultants LTD, which advised U.S. multinationals on foreign direct investment. Mr. Bickford was the International Treasurer at American Express Company and later a manager and international advisor at Brown Brothers Harriman in New York. Previously, he was the international treasury manager at Standard Brands, Inc. and earlier a manager at Arthur Young & Co. (now Ernst & Young). At Block Mr. Bickford directs strategy and corporate finance.
Al Weggeman, Chief Operating Officer
Mr. Weggeman comes to Block Engineering with over 20 years of business leadership experience in technology and highly-engineered component companies. In his most recent role as the President of L3 Technologies Security and Detection Systems, he was responsible for leading the team and initiatives that delivered significant P&L performance improvement in an accelerated timeframe. L3 Security and Detection Systems is a global leader in the development, manufacture and sale of security and detection systems for aviation, transportation, government and critical infrastructure. Prior to L3, he served as Vice President of The Safariland Group, a leading provider of technology based Personal Protective Equipment. In this role he was responsible for approximately 1,800 global operations personnel, as well as two P&L segments. Prior to The Safariland Group, he was President and CEO of the Stamford Industrial Group, and President of a GE subsidiary company. Mr. Weggeman earned a Master's in Management (MBA) from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, as well as a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Northeastern University.
Anish Goyal, Vice President of Technology
Dr. Goyal is an expert in the area of mid-infrared laser technologies and applications. He joined Block from MIT Lincoln Laboratory where he was a member of the Technical Staff in the Laser Technology and Applications Group working on quantum cascade lasers, diode lasers, fiber lasers, solid-state lasers, wavelength beam combining, and photonic integrated circuits while also developing systems and sensors based on these technologies. He has recently had particular interest in mid-infrared hyperspectral imaging for the detection of trace chemicals on surfaces. Dr. Goyal leads all aspects of technology development, assessment and demonstration of new commercial and government applications, and establishment of corporate technology strategies. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara, specializing in Solid-State Device Technology, and a B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Bachir Kharraja, Vice President of Engineering
Dr. Kharraja holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Physics from the Universite Louis Pasteur in France, a Doctorat D'etat in Physics from the Universite Chouaib Doukkali in Morocco, and a B.S. in Physics from Universite Mohammed V de Rabat in Morocco. He joined Block from Roboworx, a robotics firm that he co-founded. Before that he held engineering management positions at Topflight Technologies, Rypos, Bluefin Robotics, iRobot and Motorola. Dr. Kharraja heads up Block's Engineering Department, including product development and commercialization for commercial products.
Swathi Ramanujan, Controller
Ms. Ramanujan comes to Block Engineering with over 6 years of public accounting experience at the Deloitte Boston and Deloitte Chennai, India offices. Prior to joining Block she was responsible for the audits of several domestic and international clients of Deloitte. She has worked with clients in a range of industries, including manufacturing, financial services, wholesale, public sector and not-for-profit. Ms. Ramanujan holds a CPA license in the US and a CA certificate from India, as well as a B.S. in Commerce and Accounting from the University of Chennai, India.
Joe Schwab, Vice President of Marketing and Sales
Mr. Schwab earned an M.S. in Analytical Chemistry from West Virginia University and a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. He joined Block from AMETEK, a leading analytical instruments company, where he rose to the level of Business Unit Manager of AMETEK Process Instruments. Prior to AMETEK, Joe also worked as an Account Manager at ASI Applied Systems, a Mettler Toledo company, which was a leading manufacturer of laboratory and process FTIRs and was responsible for the sales of analytical instruments in the Gulf, West Coast and Mexico. Joe also worked at ABB (Asea Brown Boveri) Process Analytics company, one of the largest process control companies in the world.
