Block Engineering is a developer of lasers and chemical detection systems for safety, security, and life sciences applications. Block is the proud winner of two Photonics West Prism Awards and the Milipol Paris Innovation Award. The company is headquartered in Southborough, Massachusetts in the greater Boston metro area.
Block is seeking a hands-on Lead Mechanical Engineer to lead the development of Block’s mid-infrared laser products and laser-based spectrometers. Work will include the development of commercial products and the transition of R&D projects into manufacturing.
The position will be on-site at Block Engineering’s office in Southborough, MA.
Responsibilities will include:
- Guide the design, development, and commercialization of lasers and laser-based spectrometers by leading the mechanical, opto-mechanical, and optics development efforts.
- Lead DFM/DFA (Design for Manufacturing/Assembly) initiatives and cost-reduction/size-reduction efforts for all commercial products.
- Document system requirements as part of the product design process.
- Aid in the completion of government R&D programs by collaborating with the Director of Government Programs to support engineering and prototyping requirements.
- Model system performance to ensure field-based environmental conditions will be met.
- Conduct team design reviews and document milestones.
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
- BSME with at least 10 years of experience designing and modeling mechanical, electro-mechanical, and/or electro-optical products and systems. MSME is a plus.
- Expertise with Solidworks and Solidworks PDM.
- Experience developing and commercializing ruggedized products, including cost reduction and miniaturization efforts.
- Ability to qualify for a security clearance, due to work on government programs.
The following qualifications, while not mandatory for this role, are a plus:
- Experience designing optical and optomechanical systems, including the use of Zemax for optical modeling.
- Experience with thermal and structural FEA.
- Understanding of electronic controls and power systems.
- Expertise in 3D printing/additive manufacturing design and implementation.
- Systems engineering experience, including experience with optical instrumentation incorporating advanced electronics, embedded software, optics, spectroscopy, and/or lasers.
