Hardware Systems Development Manager
Block is currently seeking a Hardware Systems Development Manager to lead the development of the next generation of the LaserScan™ product line. These devices utilize a unique laser/optical design and take advantage of Block's decades-long experience in infrared spectroscopy. The Hardware Systems Development Manager will report to the Vice President of Engineering.
The Hardware Systems Development Manager will lead the hardware development of next generation laser-based spectroscopy systems. The position will be responsible for various aspects of system design from interfacing with marketing, sales, and customers to define product requirements to conceptual opto-mechanical system design, hands-on design work, through assembly, test, and validation. The Hardware Systems Development Manager will participate in some or all of the following: software and electronics architecture definition, systems requirements definition, system tradeoff analyses, error budgeting and tolerancing, opto-mechanical design, performance evaluation and trouble-shooting, component specification and selection, and development of assembly and test procedures. This position involves leading a small interdisciplinary team. The ability to interact productively with marketing, customers, engineering, and manufacturing personnel is essential. Depending on the candidate, the position may transition to managing a product development team.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities include:
- Interface with marketing, sales, and customers to define product requirements
- Translate customer requirements into performance-based hardware requirements for optical and laser systems, and design laser and opto-mechanical systems to meet customer requirements
- Serve as a technical and programmatic lead for the development of next generation spectrometers
- Produce conceptual and detailed opto-mechanical designs for handheld and laboratory systems
- Work with optical designers to develop packaging designs and implement alignment techniques
- Perform FEM simulations of thermal, structural, shock, and vibration phenomena
- Implement optimization techniques to streamline transition of optical designs to manufacturable products
Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):
- Masters or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- Minimum 10 years of experience in mechanical design and engineering
- Experience designing complex opto-mechanical systems with telecommunications/military specs
- Experience with FEM simulations of thermal, structural, shock, and vibration phenomena
- Experience designing for manufacturing, preparing documentation, and interfacing with suppliers
- Experience designing complex handheld instruments for military or commercial markets
- Experience interfacing with marketing, sales, and customers for product definition
- Prior experience in systems engineering with infrared optical systems, lasers, MEMS, and spectroscopy in a product-development setting is strongly preferred
- Experience bringing products through research and development phases to market
- Ability to function as a technical lead and manager in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial company
- Ability to function across multiple disciplines
